Amazon Behavioral Interview Questions & Answer Bank
The complete Amazon behavioral interview question bank organized by Leadership Principle, with sample answer structures and a free practice app.
Published
The Amazon loop is two behavioral questions per interviewer, each tied to a specific Leadership Principle (LP). A typical 5-round loop = 10 LP questions, drawn from a question bank that's been roughly stable for the last 5 years. Below is the working bank organized by the 14 LPs, with the 2–3 most-asked questions per principle. Bring 2 prepared STAR stories per LP and you'll cover every loop. Each story should be 90–120 seconds, end with a measurable result, and explicitly call out which LP behavior you demonstrated.
How Amazon's bar raisers actually score you
Each interviewer takes notes against the LPs they own and writes a Strong Hire / Hire / No Hire / Strong No Hire after the loop. The bar raiser overrides the rest of the panel. They're trained to weight:
- Specificity. "I led a team" doesn't count. "I was the EM of 8 engineers on the X team, and the project was Y" counts.
- First-person verbs. "We" answers get probed. They want to know what you did.
- Recency and scale. Stories from >3 years ago or from a 4-person school project get discounted.
- What you learned. Every answer should end with a 1-sentence reflection.

Build your story matrix in 2 hours
Don't prep 28 stories. Prep 8 strong stories that each map to 3–4 LPs. Most loops are covered by:
- A failure story (Are Right A Lot, Earn Trust, Learn and Be Curious)
- A disagreement story (Have Backbone, Earn Trust)
- A scope-creep ownership story (Ownership, Bias for Action)
- A scrappy under-resourced delivery (Frugality, Deliver Results)
- A long-term technical or strategic bet (Think Big, Insist on the Highest Standards)
- A coaching/mentorship story (Hire and Develop, Earn Trust)
- A customer-rescue story (Customer Obsession, Dive Deep)
- A simplification or process-fix story (Invent and Simplify, Bias for Action)
For each story, write the STAR in bullet form (don't memorize prose), then practice the spoken delivery 5+ times.

Speakfect's Behavioral Interview mode includes the Amazon LP category — every question above plus a few rotating bonus prompts. Pick the category, hit Shuffle Question, record your answer, get scored on filler words, pace, and STAR completeness. The Mock Q&A drill (Premium) fires a follow-up question after every answer — a real-style "What would you do differently?" or "How did the team react?" — to train you for the second-level probing every Amazon interviewer does.

Frequently asked
How long is each Amazon answer supposed to be? 90–120 seconds for the initial answer. Be ready for 30–60 seconds of follow-ups.
Do bar raisers count "we" against you? Yes. They will explicitly probe — "What did you do?" — until you answer in the first person.
How many LPs will I be asked about in a single loop? Usually 8–10 across 5 interviewers. Most interviewers cover 2 LPs each.
Should I name the LP in my answer? You can, but don't force it. Better to demonstrate the behavior than to label it.
