What counts as a filler word?
Filler words are the little sounds and crutch phrases that buy your brain a moment while it finds the next thought — um, uh, er, like, you know, basically, actually, so. A few are completely normal; everyone uses them. They only become a problem when they cluster so densely that listeners notice the fillers instead of your message.
What’s a good filler density?
As a rough guide, under 4% filler density sounds polished, 4–6% starts to feel noticeable, and above 6% becomes distracting. The fastest way to improve isn’t to memorise a script — it’s to get comfortable pausing in silence instead of filling the gap.
